Customer reactivation means winning back people who have bought from you before but have gone quiet: you split the dormant base into segments from CRM history and give each one a reason and a channel — a Telegram, WhatsApp or SMS message, a call from a voice AI agent, or a call from a manager. Contact only those who consented. Such a customer already knows you. Per a Harvard Business Review overview (2014), acquiring a new customer costs 5 to 25 times more than keeping an existing one. In Zukko.AI, an AI agent platform for business, the dormant segment is built from record fields: time since the last purchase (60, 90 or 180 days), pipeline stage, purchase category, tag and channel. Messages go out via Telegram, WhatsApp or SMS; segments that need a conversation get a call from the voice AI agent. Start with a small segment and measure the response on your own base.
A business that has been trading for more than a year accumulates CRM contacts who bought once and then disappeared. Advertising brings in new people while these customers go unattended. Reactivation brings them back into a conversation — without bought lists and without an “everyone gets the same text” blast.
What customer reactivation is and why a dormant base is an asset
A dormant customer is a contact who has bought or enquired before but has not come back for a long time: no replies, no orders, no visits. They know you and once trusted you — unlike cold traffic from an ad.
There is a verifiable footing for this logic: retention economics. A Harvard Business Review overview (2014) notes that acquiring a new customer is, depending on the study and the industry, five to 25 times more expensive than retaining an existing one. Fred Reichheld of Bain & Company (2001) gave financial services as an example: a 5% increase in customer retention produces more than a 25% increase in profit. Both figures are about retaining current customers, not about winning back lapsed ones: there is no reliable general statistic for the share of dormant customers who return. So measure the effect of reactivation on your own base — on a small segment first.
Re-engagement or new advertising: which pays off
It is not either/or — but it is almost always better to start with the base you already have.
| Parameter | Re-engaging the CRM base | New advertising / cold traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Who it reaches | People who bought and know you | Strangers |
| Cost per contact | Lower — the contact is already in the base | Higher — you pay for every click or impression |
| Level of trust | There is history and a purchase | From zero |
| Speed of launch | The campaign goes out today | Account setup, moderation, learning phase |
| Data for personalisation | Tag, pipeline stage, purchase history | Almost none |
Advertising is what grows the base. But before pouring budget into new traffic, it makes sense to pick the low-hanging fruit — the people already inside.
How to build the dormant segment from the CRM
The key mistake is sending “everyone the same text”. The power of re-engagement comes from building the segment out of data rather than from a general list. In Zukko.AI the segment is built from the fields of the customer record:
- By recency — for example, no purchase for 60, 90 or 180 days; the threshold depends on your purchase cycle.
- By pipeline stage — enquired but never reached payment.
- By purchase history — bought a specific category (so you can offer the same or something complementary).
- By tag — “asked about delivery”, “asked the price”, “was on a trial”.
- By channel — where exactly the customer talked to you (Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp).
The tighter the segment, the more appropriate the message — and the higher the response. More on how smart campaigns from a CRM work in the guide to bulk campaigns.
Customer reactivation: segment, hook and channel — message or call
A dormant base is not uniform. The table below helps you split it by what the CRM record shows, decide what to lead with and choose the channel.
| Dormant segment | Sign in the CRM | What to lead with | Channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recently gone quiet | Bought regularly, then skipped one or two usual cycles | A reminder and something new in a familiar category | A message in the messenger where you already talked |
| One-time buyers | One purchase, no repeat | A complementary product or service to the first purchase | A message; an AI agent call if the segment is large |
| Stopped halfway | An enquiry or invoice exists, no payment | Asking what got in the way and helping to finish the order | An AI agent call; complex cases go to a manager |
| Former regulars and large accounts | High order value or a long history, then silence | A personal approach and individual terms | A call from a manager |
| Left with a complaint | A complaint, refund or refusal on the record | Fixing the problem first, with no offer | A call from a manager; no campaign message |
| Unsubscribed or asked not to be called | An opt-out is marked on the record | Nothing — leave them alone | No channel |
| No recorded consent | Unclear where the contact came from, no consent on file | Not included in the campaign | None until consent is obtained |
The voice AI agent calls inactive customers by segment, holds a real conversation, writes the outcome to the CRM record and hands anything outside the scenario to a manager together with the transcript. The calling window is set in the campaign settings: promotional calls run only from 09:00 to 18:00. The agent respects a refusal or a request not to call. AI calls are available only on the Enterprise plan, from 15,000,000 UZS a month. How to build the scenario is covered in the article on automated customer calls. If the goal is a payment reminder rather than a win-back, that is a different job: debt reminder calls.
The reactivation scenario: from segment to reply
- You build the dormant segment by a rule (for example: bought, but silent for 90 days).
- You remove everyone who unsubscribed, asked not to be called or has no recorded consent.
- You write a short personal message or a call scenario — using their name and a clear reason to come back (a new item, a reminder, an offer).
- The AI campaign platform sends the message on the right channel — Telegram, WhatsApp, Email, or SMS for those without internet; where a conversation is needed, the voice AI agent calls the segment. You can launch it now, on a schedule or on an event — a deal stage change, a date, a customer action. The ready-made “no purchase for N days” rule launches the campaign automatically.
- Customer replies come back into the inbound conversation, where the AI employee or a manager picks them up.
- The campaign shows delivery, reads and replies — you can see which segment and which reason worked.
Which channels bring customers back in Uzbekistan
Re-engagement works where the customer already reads their messages:
- Telegram — the familiar channel for talking to a business in Uzbekistan.
- WhatsApp — a mass messenger, convenient for reminders and confirmations.
- SMS — reach for people with no internet or who are not on messengers.
A multichannel campaign from one CRM beats a scattering of SMS gateways: one segment, one text with personalisation, several channels — and all the analytics in one place.
How to bring customers back lawfully
Re-engagement is a campaign, and the rules apply to it. Do it cleanly:
- Consent (opt-in). Advertising in the course of providing telecommunications services — calls, SMS — is allowed only with the subscriber’s prior consent (Article 30 of Uzbekistan’s Law “On Advertising”); from 1 November 2026, Resolution PP-265 requires written or electronic consent for promotional SMS and bans promotional calls and notifications over mobile networks from 18:00 to 09:00. The law does not name messengers; the safe practice is to collect consent for them too and to put disputed cases to a lawyer. A contact that has sat in your base for years is not consent: write to and call only people who gave you their contact and agreed to be contacted. Bought lists and “grey” campaigns are not reactivation, they are spam. More in the article on consent and anti-spam.
- Unsubscribe (opt-out). Every campaign needs a clear way to opt out, and a request not to be called should be recorded on the customer record. It reduces complaints and protects the reputation of your number.
- Personal data. Processing phone numbers, names and purchase history is governed by the Law “On Personal Data” (ZRU-547) as amended by ZRU-1125. Which data must stay in the country is explained in the article on data localisation under ZRU-547. Zukko.AI stores the data of customers from Uzbekistan in the country.
- Platform rules. WhatsApp Business and Telegram have their own requirements for bulk messaging — breaking them gets the number blocked.
Zukko.AI campaigns are designed for customers who already talk to you on these channels, and they follow each channel’s rules; unsubscribe is built in — the recipient opts out with a button or a command, and the system excludes them from later sends. This is help with compliance, not a legal guarantee — the legal assessment for your business comes from your lawyer.
What the business gets
- Revenue from an asset you already have — you bring back people you paid for once, with no new advertising budget.
- Precise targeting — a segment from CRM history instead of a blind “everyone” list.
- A fast launch — the campaign goes out the day the segment is ready, with no ad account setup or moderation.
- Replies are not lost — the customer’s response comes back into the inbound conversation with the AI employee.
- Transparency — delivery, reads and replies are visible per segment.
Onboarding takes from 2 hours for a small business and up to 30 days for an enterprise.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a dormant base
A dormant base means contacts who bought or enquired before but stopped coming back. There is no single cut-off: the threshold follows the normal purchase cycle in your niche. For food delivery it is a few missed weeks; for furniture or renovation, many months. A good marker: the customer has skipped one or two usual cycles.
How do I know it is time to win a customer back rather than leave them alone
It is time when the customer has skipped one or two purchase cycles, there is no open complaint on the record and you hold their consent. Leave alone anyone who unsubscribed, asked not to be called, has just had a complaint answered or is already with a manager. One relevant reason beats a string of reminders: no reply means pause.
Will reactivation look like spam
No — if you write to people who consented, to a precise segment, with a clear reason to come back and a one-step opt-out. Spam is defined by the basis for sending, not the number of messages: a bought list and one text for everyone look like spam, while a personal message built on CRM history reads as a timely reminder.
Message or call: which works better for reactivation
A message suits large segments and a simple reason: a reminder, something new, a complementary product. A voice AI agent call fits when a conversation is needed — to find out what stopped a payment or to book a visit. A manager calls high-value customers and those who left with a complaint. Choose the channel per segment, not per base.
Where does the segment come from
From CRM data: the tag, pipeline stage, date and category of the last purchase, and the channel the customer used. That is why reactivation is more precise than advertising — you already hold the history. In Zukko.AI the audience is built from tags, pipeline stage and history without manual lists or exports, and the campaign goes to that segment.
Is consent required to reactivate an old base
Yes. Article 30 of Uzbekistan’s Law “On Advertising” allows advertising through telecommunications services — calls, SMS — only with the subscriber’s prior consent, and ZRU-547 governs personal data. The law does not name messengers, but collect consent for them too. The age of a contact does not replace consent. Bought lists and blasts to everyone are spam and risk a channel block.
How long does it take to launch reactivation
A small business sets up and launches Zukko.AI on its own in as little as 2 hours; an enterprise rollout takes up to 30 days, including the security review. The campaign itself takes four steps: a CRM segment, the message, the channel and time, and delivery tracking. Outbound calling by the voice AI agent is AI calls: Enterprise plan only, from 15,000,000 UZS a month with 2,200 minutes included and 1,900 UZS per extra minute.
